Day 9 of Design Inspirations – Monograms

Perhaps it is the letter itself that attracts me. Not certain, but this expert Seattle interior designer, loves to leave a monogram somewhere in my interior designs. Fortunately my favorite manufacturer, Hickory Chair, makes this very easy. So I like to place them on the inside or outside of chair backs for starters, then there are pillows. Lots of choices and design opportunities.

Day 8 of Design Inspirations – Ikats

Since the beginning of my design career, this Seattle interior design, sought Ikat patterns in my interior design. What is an ikat? Ikats have been woven in cultures all over the world. In Central andSouth America, Ikat is still common in Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador, Guatemala and Mexico. Ikat, or Ikkat, is a style of weaving that uses a resist dyeing process similar to tie-dye on either the warp or weft before the threads are woven to create a pattern or design. A Double Ikat is when both the warp and the weft are tie-dyed before weaving.

Slipper chairs are so named as the small perches Victorian ladies occupied while “slipping” on their shoes. 20th century ladies broadened the use of these versatile little chairs to serve many purposes: an extra chair by the fireside, by the cocktail table, in boudoirs or dressing rooms. So adaptable to multiple space and always ready to be “slipped” into position.

Day 6 of Design Inspirations – Lapchi Rugs

This expert Seattle interior designer developed a love affair with rugs from Nepal in the late 90’s when living in the Midwest. Via the Chicago Merchandise Mart and a fabulous mentor, Lynn Urstadt, I started my learning curve (it still continues!). When I moved to Portland, OR in 2001 I quickly discovered Lapchi which coincidentally was founded in the same year in Portland.

I am inspired to work with these designs and personalize them to my clients inclinations. Superb detailing and quality always accompanies the rug result. Read more about my infatuation with rugs here.

Production in Kathmandu is a blend of old and new. The entire weaving process is done according to traditional handmade methods, imparting subtle nuances not available with machine-made or tufted methods. Order processing and production management using state-of-the-art technology, however, keep the information part of the business highly efficient. No other carpet company can match designer time and quality requirements as effectively.

As the capstone of all its efforts, Lapchi is a leading contributor to The RugMark Foundation, working to end illegal child labor in the rug trade (www.rugmark.org).

Day 5 of Design Inspirations – The Hallings Secretary by Hickory Chair

This Seattle interior designer is inspired by this classic secretary from Hickory Chair designed by Thomas O’Brien. It is a memorable design and suitable for so many areas of a home; the bedroom, kitchen, library, home office. For myself, I imagine it in my bedroom.

As striking open as it is closed, the spare lines of this sophisticated secretary recall the chic style of a 1940’s French design. The understated case is raised by a subtle saber leg, topped by a discreet hinged compartment and finished standard in Antique Ivory. The secretary’s interior is executed in richly toned kingwood with a Classic finish interior and is outfitted with a variety of drawers, round ring pulls, Hepplewhite knobs and a leather-insert desktop.

Yes, I confess, this expert Seattle interior designer adores this appliance. Beyond a great dishwasher for space challenged condos or homes, the Miele 18″ integrated dishwasher is a perfect solution for quick cleaning of stemware, bowls and glasses when placed in a butler’s pantry. Yes, this Seattle interior designer joins the city to celebrate El Nino.. and the warmest February ever. I love the blooming flowers, magnolia trees near flowering and the smiles on everyone’s faces.

Day 1 of Design Inspirations – Suzanis

This Seattle designer loves Suzanis. And I have posted about them earlier, Suzani Excitement Emerges in Home Interiors.

Suzani is a type of embroidered and decorative tribal textile made in Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and other Central Asian countries. Its name is from the Persian سوزن Suzan which means needle. The art of making such textiles in Iran is called سوزنکاری Suzankāri (needlework).

Chain, satin, and buttonhole stitches are the primary stitches used. There is also extensive use of couching, in which decorative thread laid on the fabric as a raised line is stitched in place with a second thread.

Suzanis were traditionally made by Central Asian brides as part of their dowry, and were presented to the groom on the wedding day.
