Sadly, I share your concerns but it is still an education. They think this is 'instant' furniture but most don't realize that they will wait 8+ weeks to receive something they order. The quality is an issue. That said, there are some worthy pieces to be purchased from these companies and can be used selectively. Most still come from outside our country.

I fear we have lost a whole generation of young homeowners who think that Ikea, Crate & Barrel, and Potter Barn are the sellers of fine furntiure. The demand for good furniture may not ever return.

Now it's up to the consumer to buy local and demand quality product.
It will cost more at first but it will last longer.

That is so true. most of the cheap furniture that you can buy from places like IKEA are made in india from the cheapest materials there are. The can be used for a year, and then you will have to get new ones.

I am probably one of a very few who lived through vitually all of what Mike has written. There are some issues i have on his recollection of the Cushman purchase by the "outswiders", grad students at the Tuck School, Dartmouth, supported by the vermont Redvelopment Authority. Further, I was involved with a regioanl manufacturer at the time, Sprague Carlton. The success of Pennsylvania House's growth was multi-part. It was due to the decision of Ethan Allen to go to a store program, and it was due to the failure of legacy brands like Heywood Wakefield, Sprague Carlton and Tell City Chair to capitalize on the opportunity. Ultimately, they all failed. There is much I would like to share from my point of view, an "insider" who is 3rd generation within the industry. Also, I have some of the documentation to support what I am saying.
