Call it perfect or WOW but a stunning powder room begins with a focal point. As a Seattle interior designer who’s designed many a powder room, my experience tells me it can be a sink, cabinet, mirror, wall-covering, color. It is something dramatic that immediately creates emotion. Powder rooms are made for statements so exaggeration is allowed. In a previous post about powder rooms, I shared an image from a San Francisco showhouse showing a very narrow powder room. In the photo below is a dramatic glass sink placed on a counter of reclaimed wood from a Street of Dreams I designed.

Over the past months the question of drapery length is a popular conversation. My clients ask and both my drapery workroom and installer have opinions on the topic. Over many years, this expert Seattle interior designer has observed a shift. Historically, the rule is to allow 1/2″ of space between the finished floor and the drapes. More recently, I see a trend to allow the draperies to ‘graze’ the floor. When this occurs the drapery pleat becomes softened and the look more casual. See an example of ‘grazing’ below.

Historically and currently, many workrooms, installers and window treatment professionals prefer to maintain 1/2″ as an allowance. See the example below.

I am interested to learn your preference about drapery length. So let me know. Please comment and weigh in on this topic.

Are you considering the purchase of an accessory for your home? Do you wonder what is useful and lasting? This question comes frequently via Ask Faith First for this Seattle based interior designer.
My tip this week is a garden stool. Not only are stools useful in all sorts of locations, they are equally traditional, transitional, contemporary and modern. They are useful indoors and outdoors. They come in a multitude of colors, sizes and shapes. My favorite company is Emissary which has a long, lasting history.

The April issue of Veranda features the interior of a townhouse by designer sisters Kelli Ford and Kirsten Fitzgibbons. This Seattle interior designer is enthralled and inspired by the geometric elements of fabrics, rugs, pillows against the calm ivory, serene contrasts. It is stunning and I absolutely love the rug by Stark.

That geometric rug inspiration led to the discovery of a rug designed by Kim Alexandriuk for Doris Leslie Blau as part of her Modern Primitive collection. It’s another stunning rug to use as a definition for a black and ivory/white interior.

Kim’s rug was featured in the current issue of Traditional Home. According to the article, “Alexandriuk was inspired by textiles from Africa and the Southwest Pacific to create carpets that breezily cross borders. Her striped cotton dhurrie is based on a North African Abaya textile work as a coat by tribesmen.”
