Accessories Tell Your Story

Written by faith | View Comments

This past week I prepared for an interior design photo-shoot in the Seattle metro. I was reminded once again of the power of accessories to capture the essence of a home and communicate the story of the owners. This project is about a fabulous 2-story pavilion. The main level features a bar in a British Colonial style and large flatscreen for entertainment and parties. The second floor is all about billiards, poker, cigars and scotch.

A Rule to Remember: Interior accessories provide the finishing touch to any space. Accessories give rooms personality, character and texture. Add things that say something about you!

The most important thing to consider when accessorizing a room is that you are  not merely ‘filling space’. You are sharing your personality and individuality.  So select items you love, that have meaning for you and then showcase them. In this instance, riding and competing with horses is a hobby so we started with cast iron horses sourced at Baker Furniture in Seattle. Surrounding the large flat-screen are images of Seabiscuit acquired by my clients to maintain the message and harmonize with the interior.

Zigzag Design Themes for Interiors

Written by faith | View Comments

Quadrille Fabrics Taskent

This fall my Seattle interior designs will reflect the zigzag theme emerging from couture and summer fashion themes.  Over the summer,  beach fashions from Flip flops to beach towels and bikinis displayed the colorful theme.  I expect interior design introductions for the fall to offer more of the same in textiles, rugs, upholstered furniture and accessories. I think a cashmere throw for a sofa or chair in a zigzag is a great accent opportunity.  Look for more tips about introducing patterns into your interior design soon.

A Guide to Top Floor Lamps

Written by faith | View Comments

Seeking a floor lamp that is a stand out?  Floor lamps add vertical dimension to a room design and offer an interruption from the horizontal lines of the sofa, chairs and tables. They are a great way to finish a space and brighten a corner or provide a great light source for reading your novel or newspaper.

Floor lamps also save space if you are space challenged. Oversize shades are currently popular and they shed a wide, diffuse glow in the room.  In contrast an adjustable arm lamp is ideal for reading since the light is cast just where you want it.

Here are some favorites of mine in a variety of styles to consider for your home.

Does Your Foyer Speak to You? Before and After

Written by faith | View Comments

There is a saying that first impression lasts. The foyer is the setting that beckons the depth of your home to your guests. Treat it as the signal of what lies ahead for your eager visitors with a good visual and emotional display that arouses their senses and leaves an enduring memory of time well spent in your home.

Here is a before and after example.  In this multi-level home, the entrance affords a water and mountain view immediately. With that drama, the goal was to complement but not compete and provide a gracious, elegant accent.

A console table in your foyer can serve as a staging ground for your accessories, like photos, lamps, vases, and small art work.  Whether you use table lamps, sconces, or natural forms of lighting, the impact of lighting adds and enhances the appeal of the senses coordinating with the rest of the furnishings to produce a tasteful and gratifying response towards a greater appreciation of the focal points of the room. Focus your lighting to add soft warmth, to highlight a beautiful painting or artwork or use lighting to create an impact.

Use wall art to make it more interesting. You can either have a single framed wall art or multiple frames. Decorate your table or console with accessories  Whatever you do, decorate sparing to avoid overcrowding the design. Keep your design clean and interesting so that each piece can be visible.
