Day 9 of Design Inspirations – Monograms

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Perhaps it is the letter itself that attracts me.  Not certain, but this expert Seattle interior designer, loves to leave a monogram somewhere in my interior designs. Fortunately my favorite manufacturer, Hickory Chair, makes this very easy.  So I like to place them on the inside or outside of chair backs for starters, then there are pillows.  Lots of choices and design opportunities.

Here are some examples to get you thinking – and inspired.  All images courtesy of Hickory Chair.

Day 7 of Design Inspirations – Slipper Chairs

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

Recently this expert Seattle interior designer sourced a slipper chair for a project and refreshed my memory of some favorites. The slipper chair is so versatile for additional seating in a conversational grouping or in a bedroom, library and such.  Here are some favorites.

Edward Ferrell Monte Slipper Chair

Lewis Mittman Mustache Chair

Hancock and Moore Aston Slipper Chair

Hickory Chair Avon Armless Chair

Pearson Furniture Perching Chair

Slipper chairs are so named as the small perches Victorian ladies occupied while “slipping” on their shoes.  20th century ladies broadened the use of these versatile little chairs to serve many purposes: an extra chair by the fireside, by the cocktail table, in boudoirs or dressing rooms.   So adaptable to  multiple space and always ready to be “slipped” into position.

Day 5 of Design Inspirations – The Hallings Secretary by Hickory Chair

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

This Seattle interior designer is inspired by this classic secretary from Hickory Chair designed by Thomas O’Brien. It is a memorable design and suitable for so many areas of a home; the bedroom, kitchen, library, home office.  For myself, I imagine it in my bedroom.

As striking open as it is closed, the spare lines of this sophisticated secretary recall the chic style of a 1940’s French design. The understated case is raised by a subtle saber leg, topped by a discreet hinged compartment and finished standard in Antique Ivory. The secretary’s interior is executed in richly toned kingwood with a Classic finish interior and is outfitted with a variety of drawers, round ring pulls, Hepplewhite knobs and a leather-insert desktop.

Add Eye Appeal to a Long Hallway

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

Do you struggle to make your long hallway less of a tunnel and more a striking eye-catcher?  Here are some solutions to make that happen from your expert Seattle interior designer.

• Place artwork on the wall at the end of the hall — the more dramatic the art, the better,  and add lighting.

• Use a bookcase at the end of the hall.

• A small bench with artwork or a mirror.

• Sometimes paint and a pop of color is the quick solution.

• An end wall is perfect for family pictures attractively arranged and again lit.

My favorite company, Hickory Chair, is my source for unique pieces like the mirror and open bookcase and bench.
