How to Use Mirrors for Magical Effects

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

In my Seattle bathroom, my mirror sometimes tells me more than I want to know :-)   but nontheless, I love how mirrors transform interiors.  In my interior design practice, I strategically and sometimes whimsically locate all types of mirrors for function, sparkle and a touch of luxury. No matter if your home is older, dark or new and bright, there is a mirror perfectly suited for your taste.

Hickory Chair Soleil 48 Mirror

  • This large, 48″ mirror, replaces artwork in this room setting. Look for large mirrors at antique stores, garage sales and attics of family members.  You can make one if you find a picture frame you love or purchase picture moulding and frame a mirror instead of art.

  •  A few years ago I saw a collection of trays like those in the photo.  These could hang over a bed or in a hallway.

Decorating with Accessories: First a Mirror

Ideally, the accessories in a home are collected in stages. Select them carefully and make sure they actually add something to the space or do not conflict with the main furnishings in color and scale.  Often one of the first selections is a mirror with size and details such as a beautiful wood finish or a bevel detail.

The Adair Mirror was inspired by an antique Irish Mirror, circa 1840, that hangs in Suzanne Kasler’s bedroom. The original mirror is a very rare 19th century ebonized and gilt wood oval wall mirror, with ivory accents and faceted cut clear glass mounts. The faceted cut glass has been replaced with genuine SwarovskiTM crystals.36″h x 36″w x 1.25″d
