Fantasy Potting Sheds and Recycled Wine Casks are New Outdoor Living Trend

Written by faith | 0

Back to my comments as a Seattle interior designer and judge of this year’s Portland Street of Dreams and this time focus is on the outdoors. There’s lots of excellent ideas to make use of in this years homes.  The Oregon Dream executed their outdoor areas with inspiring creativity.

Outdoor chandeliers are often unappealing but not this one at Da Vinci.. I’d love to use this on an outdoor living design project.

What a clever way to recycle wine casks? I loved this idea at the Da Vinci home.. planting a vegetable garden in a former oak wine cask.

Outdoor spaces equal space to relax and soothe our spirits and a water feature is the perfect way to accomplish this. I think this one at Mystic Ridge is just the ticket.

A fairy tale potting shed is the perfect fantasy for gardeners or weekend puttering and planting. The idyllic home is a feature of the Rivendall Manor and completes an impressive Old World styled and designed home.

A Luxurious Outdoor Space Adds Value to Your Home

Written by faith | 3

Small indulgences in your Seattle outdoor space turns your patio into a retreat you just won’t want to leave. Yes, these investments also add value to your home but more importantly they add enjoyment to your outdoor area immediately. Leading the way, outdoor furniture defines the way your spaces flow. You can easily transition your traditional entertaining outside. Unlike never before, you can blur the two spaces and make them one.

If you’re ready to increase enjoyment of your outdoor space, start with selections of the outdoor room elements you want to include.

Faith’s Quick Tips

  1. Coordinate your interior and exterior spaces for visual flow.
  2. Complement your furniture to the architecture of your home and the natural surroundings.
  3. Don’t skimp  on furniture – budget for it as you would any other element of your home.
  4. Define areas for dining, chatting and lounging.
  5. Consider maintenance when selecting materials for furniture and available storage for cushions.
  6. Choose accessories as you would inside – outdoor area rug, different levels of lighting-candles, chandeliers, party lights.
  7. What about firepits and fireplaces, electronics, outdoor kitchen, refrigeration?
  8. Semi-covered area and heaters are important for the Northwest.

Add Color Pops on your Patio with Colorful Containers

Written by faith | 2

If you need color on your patio to complement your plants, choose a colorful pot for a quick ‘color-pop’. In my Seattle outdoor space designs, I found colorful fiberglass containers from Old Town Fiberglass as a perfect solution. The pots are part of the overall color scheme for my outdoor furnishings. Here are some great examples:

On the Seattle Madison Park penthouse roof deck, we featured colorful lime green containers which coordinate with the Sunbrella fabrics used on the teak furniture.  The image shows how the plants, containers and fabrics all harmonize for a Color Pop.

Spruce Up Your Outdoor Space with Colorful Fabrics

Written by faith | 0

The gray days make this Seattle interior designer imagine a colorful patio with inviting colors and fabrics beckoning me outside. Over time the fabrics and cushions break down with exposure to rain and sun.  But easy, well priced options are so available today. I’ve gathered some photos to inspire you and help you get a start for warmer days. And don’t forget to add accessories for color punches!

Dreaming of Color and Updates on my Patio

Written by faith | 1

Yes, Seattle is gray and wet but this March is cold with gray and wet. I’m so tired of it (believe me, I have lots of company). So this Seattle interior designer sees daffodils, pink buds and dreams of color on my patio this summer.  My teak furniture is now grayed.. and I love it that way.  Two persimmon-colored fiberglass plant containers mark the boundaries of my unit.  I created an Olioboard to get started on my updates… and the BIG update is a rug to start.

My dreamy additions:

Outdoor fabric from Schumacher

Love this persimmon print for my chaise cushion

Perfect size side table from West Elm

Love this for my patio

Coastal Stripe from Liora Mann

This anchors the furniture setting with color

Yet to come are the table accessories.. and my plants and flowers…come on sun!  Of course, there’s basil, rosemary and thyme…

Flavors for salads and bbq's

My favorite herbs

I’m wondering about a new umbrella cover too.
