5 Steps to Your Perfect Sofa

Written by faith | 0

The sofa in your home is priority seating.  Not only is it front and center in your room but those seats (and cushions) command constant use from you, your family and guests. So, how does your sofa suit you? Your lifestyle? Your style? Your home? In a nutshell, life happens on your sofa! This Seattle interior designer suggests there are 5 important considerations when you purchase a sofa.

Comfortable living at home

1.  Love it.  That means choose fabric that says something about you and your style and suits your way of living.

2.  Life happens.  Often it happens on your sofa with your dog/cat, your children, a glass of red wine, popcorn.. make sure you select a fabric accordingly. (Remember that  outdoor fabrics are totally suited for interiors today.)

3.  Imagine (and test) taking a nap on your sofa. Yes, we do this, so plan for those times when sleeping on the sofa is the occasion and make sure it’s long enough, deep enough and comfy.

4.  Fit and scale the sofa to the room.  This is so important to the overall attractiveness of your home. Consider a scale drawing or use blue tape on your floor to see the size of a sofa in the room.

5.  Finally, spice up your sofa with accent pillows for color, print and fun.

Bar Carts – A Movable Feast

Bar carts were all the rage in the 50′s and 60′s, and they’re back again.  Although bar carts are often associated with cocktails, you can use them for anything.  The beauty of the bar cart is that it has wheels, so you can move it wherever the mood strikes you.

Below are this Seattle interior designer’s top picks:

This bar cart by Restoration Hardware was inspired by a wood-and-iron cart that transported spools of wallpaper in an early 20th-century American factory.

This bar cart from Williams Sonoma is sensational. And, for a limited time, it’s $200 off. It’s only available online, so click here to buy it.

If you like to think outside  the box, how about using a bar cart for your books? You could move it wherever you’re in the mood to read.

It’s getting cold out here in the Northwest, but it’s not too soon to think summer! CB2, a division of Crate and Barrel, offers the Ernest Pool Bar Cart in high gloss pool blue.

Farewell to a Stellar Seattle Summer

Written by faith | 0

Seattle savors a stellar summer but the shorter days are sending us the message we all know is coming. As a Seattle interior designer and patio lover, I’m planning to extend my outdoor moments as long as I can. The themes of ‘back to school’ and ‘football parties’ are prime opportunities to gather and socialize as long as possible.

I’ve gathered some tips and ideas with that in mind in this blog post.  So keep the grill going, the umbrella up and cushions on your outdoor furniture for a few more weeks.

Stay on your Patio this Fall in Seattle says luxury designer Faith Sheridan

Gather friends for autumn parties this fall

Below find some tips for enjoying outdoor patios with shorter days, cooler evenings and pumpkin-inspired colors.

Six Tips to Extend Your Outdoor Spaces in Autumn

  • Take a cue from nature’s fall foliage – select pillows, throws, candles and other accessories in orange hues.
  • Punch up the table with accent colors like plum and russet red for napkins and placemats-two colors are fine.
  • Consider adding a placemat with pattern and fall colors to the mix: stripes, seasonal patterns with leaves are readily available.
  • Gather pine cones to use as accessories in baskets and bowls. Rinse, dry and spray paint if you’re adventurous.
  • Fire pits and heaters extend the outdoor entertaining so guests can linger.
  • Plan an al fresco potluck dinner or a wine tasting party with friends and neighbors.

Custom Tile Patterns Add Appeal In Bathrooms

Written by faith | 0

In about one week, I’ll know the outcome of my judging of the Portland Street of Dreams.  This Seattle interior designer eagerly anticipates the news.  From all accounts the response to this year’s homes is outstanding.  I found so many ideas of value in all the homes and in particular the clever tile patterns created by the design teams. In my design projects, I enjoy creating detail and eye appeal using a mix of tiles. So I appreciated the same in the homes I saw. I want to share them with you now.

The 20/20 home by Bernard Construction featured an Asian contemporary theme executed with great attention to detail.  The designer, Susan Green, displayed her expertise throughout the home.  Take a look at the tile patterns I found in this home.

Here are two other ones from the same home.

What an elegant statement this tile pattern makes.

Many of the homes showed off tile creativity by combining cost effective basic tiles with clever use of mosaics. I liked this one for a tub surround.

Design Trends and Tributes at the Portland Street of Dreams

Yes, I was that fortunate Seattle interior designer asked to judge this year’s Street of Dreams in the West Linn area of Portland.  No small task to review seven homes with other jurors in the space of four hours. Our first home, Montauk, invoked the Hampton’s. It is a classically styled and furnished home.

The living room ceiling captured my design eye immediately with the barrel vault detail. An easily navigated floor plan is another plus of this home. The dining room featured a grass cloth wallpaper adding some contrast to the overall neutral home in shades of gray.

Distinctive lighting fixtures throughout Montauk are supplied by Rejuvenation and support the design concept introduced on the main floor of the Delahunt home.

One final detail that captured my imagination and eye was the media room with both the seating plan for the space and the vodka bar.

I’ll continue to add to my design inspiraions from the Portland Street of Dreams.  The next home, Calistoga,  demonstates excellent features too.
